Royal Scotsman, Luxury Train Travel in Scotland

World of Whisky

Long or short, on the rocks or on the move, there's no limit to the ways in which whisky can be enjoyed. The Scots have been making whisky for hundreds of years and, despite versions from numerous other nations, nobody does it better.

Scotch whisky is, quite simply, the finest in the world. "Ireland and America make good whiskies, but they just don't have the same appealing flavours as Scotch," says Maureen Stronach of Dalwhinnie Distillery, one of the highest working distilleries in Scotland and a stop on The Royal Scotsman's Highland Journey itinerary. The Royal Scotsman also stops at Dalmore Distillery in Alness on its Classic Journey, where guests are treated to a thorough
introduction to the "gentle spirit" courtesy of Murdo, the distillery's official taster. His main claim to fame is that to date he has never failed to convert a non-whisky drinker after giving them a taste of the 40-year-old Dalmore Single Malt (at £1,450 a bottle!).

Back on board The Royal Scotsman, guests are spoilt for choice with an extensive range of whiskies in the well-stocked bar – perfect for savouring as you watch the scenery unfold from the Observation Carriage or for after-dinner toasts with your new travelling companions. But how do you get the best from your dram?

Maureen has a few tips. "Heavier malts are definitely better drunk in the evenings, or after a long walk on a crisp day. The lighter ones, meanwhile, can be very pleasant earlier in the day. A lot of the fun in drinking malt whisky is finding different experiences from it. Try nosing it first without water to see what aromas you can pick up. Then add drops of water little by little to release even more scents. From the whisky we make here at Dalwhinnie, you can get light smoke, citrus, malt and honey. When you finally come to taste it, take your time and savour every last moment. Some people also believe whisky always tastes better from a crystal glass – which is, of course, how we serve it on board The Royal Scotsman.
