Iain Gibson, Train Manager, recommends some top drams to delight all palates.
Novice – Ease yourself in with a sweeter whisky, matured in sherry casks, such as Macallan or an Isle of Jura.
Learner – Start out with a lowland whisky, such as the Edinburgh malt, Glenkinchie or the Auchentoshan from Glasgow. These whiskies are matured in Bourbon casks and are renowned for their softer, flintier style.
Experienced – As your appetite grows, your palate begins to search for that malt that will carry you through your life. Try The Balvenie, Oban or venture out to the west for Talisker from the Isle of Skye.
Expert – For those of you with an appetite for something stronger, I invite you to head to the place of my birth on the Island of Islay, home to arguably the most flavoured of all whiskies. There are eight distilleries to choose from here. Laphroaig or Ardbeg are two of the better known ones, but also seek out Lagavulin for one of the best drams you'll come across. My personal favourite, it's definitely one to savour.
Purist - Indulge yourself with our very own Royal Scotsman collection, a group of limited edition malts bottled at cask strength. Non-chill filtered to bring out their natural and distinctive flavours, these three whiskies will take your senses on a journey to the very heart of Scotland.
With over fifty single malt whiskies on board, we have a flavour to suit all tastes. Let your knowledgeable bar staff take you on your very own voyage of discovery through Scotland’s ancient and sacred vaults.
