Days Five & Six |
Day 5 - Roman Baths and Michelin Stars
Today we arrived in Bath, where we explored the historic centre on a walking tour, including the Roman baths and lunch at the Royal Crescent Hotel. After an action-packed day we were back on the train for our journey to Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in Oxfordshire, where we arrived to a Champagne reception and the chance to walk around the gardens before sitting down to a fabulous dinner at this restaurant famous for its renowned Chef, Raymond Blanc.
Our journey continued east and that night the train was stabled on the historic Nene Valley railway: guests awoke the next day to find themselves surrounded by fascinating old steam trains and carriages.
Day 6 - From Medieval Cambridge
to Georgian York
We arrived in Cambridge bright and early and, having allowed for possible rush hour traffic, had time for an unscheduled stop at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial site - breathtakingly beautiful and very moving.
We continued to Corpus Christi College and a private visit to the Parker Library: a number of guests cited its collection of medieval manuscripts, including the Bury Bible of 1125, as the number one highlight of the tour. Our time in Cambridge also included a punt trip with oarsmen who provided a fascinating commentary while poling us along.
Three hours after reboarding the train we were disembarking at York. Some guests went on a walking tour while others visited the National Railway Museum (so packed with interest that we regretted not having more time). Everyone met up at Fairfax House for evening drinks, and then it was back on the train for dinner, followed by music from a singer and pianist. Not a single guest left the Observation Carriage during their 90 minute performance, and two small dance areas were kept busy throughout. |
