Theatres
The Traverse Theatre, Royal Lyceum and King's Theatre are the Edinburgh venues with the most drama productions over the year.
During the Edinburgh Festival Fringe many more spaces are reinvented as theatre spaces - community halls, churches, sports centres, schools, and even people's private homes - to cater for the thousand plus productions taking place over the month of August.
The Edinburgh Playhouse
A spacious venue at top of Leith Walk hosting big gigs and West End Musicals and Operas, and offers very good accoustics.
The Festival and Kings Theatres
The Festival Theatre is an impressive glass-fronted theatre with one of the biggest stages in Europe usually used for Opera, Dance, Musicals and large scale theatre. The King's was a Howard and Wyndham theatre which has touring theatre productions and a old fashioned charm.
Royal Lyceum Theatre Location: 30b Grindlay Street
Edinburgh's Rep Company with varied productions from its yearly Shakespeare through to some classics, from modern to comissioned plays.
Traverse Theatre Location: 10 Cambridge Street The city's and Scotland's flagship theatre for new drama by the resident Traverse Theatre Company and touring productions by other companies from Scotland and beyond. Set in Edinburgh's West End, "the Trav" hosts writer workshops, performed readings and visiting dance companies every season.
Bedlam Theatre Location: 11b Bristo Place
A 90-seater theatre which sees lots of activity both from University thespians and fringe theatre. The venue is a converted church near Greyfriar's Bobby in the Old Town.
The Churchill Theatre Location: 33 Morningside Road The Churchill Theatre reopened in 2006 after extensive refurbishment. The Auditorium seats 353. |
