Perth and the surrounding area has been at the centre of Scottish history for almost a millenium, and it is no surprise that the high number of historical attractions, museums and castles represents this. However as much as Perth's past is its identity, the city also boasts a thriving modern culture that rivals any city in Scotland.
The history of Perth truly comes to life however in its castles and stately homes, which have been at the centre of Scotland's political and social history throughout the ages. Scone Palace, located on the outskirts of Perth, is a fantastic example of Scottish heritage and history, housing 18th Century French furniture, a superb porclain collection, Queen Victoria's boudoir and the crowning place of 42 Scottish kings, including Bonnie Prince Charlie and Robert the Bruce.
The church of St. John's Kirk is also steeped in Scottish history. As one of the oldest buildings in Perth and situated in the town centre, St. John's is a very significant historical structure. During the 16th century, John Knox fuelled the fires of the Reformation from this very location, playing an very important role in the religious history of Europe.
If you are searching for a more recent historical experience however, look no further than The Black Watch Museum, charting the incredible history of the infamous Scottish regiment over the past three centuries. Set in the grounds of Balhousie Castle, the museum exhibits Scotland's oldest highland regiment through countless artefacts, colours, medals, silvers and pictures. Perth's Museum and Art Gallery also contains permanents exhibitions detailing the social history of the area, as well as temporary exhibitions boasting a superb collection of fine and applied arts.
